Music in the 70s

Today we are going to write about the very important 70s, an era when there were many kinds of music and even the birth of some news as the hip-hop. Due to the huge amount of artists we have in this decade, as the page we have used for the bibliography, we are going to make a little resume of every single year and this way it will be easier for you to see them.

1970:  we start with the disappearance of festivals as Woodstock because of drugs and the extreme violence. The Motown gained power with their stars Jackson 5 and Diana Ross left The Supremes. That year Johnny Cash won 2 Grammys. The dream of hippies ended with the deaths of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

1971: they lived the British invasion with artists such as Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees or The Who. Old glories as The Mamas & the Papas, Cher & Sony or The Beach Boys came back. This year, we also received the bad news about the death of one of the greatest musician in history, Louis Armstrong.

1972: we lived the great emergence of soul music with fantastic singers as Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin or Marvin Gaye. Performances also changed a lot and they looked like Broadway places as Alice Cooper did. We cannot forget that Great Britain influenced once again American music with artists like David Bowie or The Rolling Stones.

1973: Soul music was still strong thanks to singers such as Barry White or Stevie Wonder. Reggaeand musicians as Johnny Nash became popular in the USA. However, foreign singers as Paul McCartney, Helen Reddy or the band Led Zeppelin ruled this year.

1974: it was a year for important reappearances like that of Bob Dylan after his 10-year hiatus, Frank Sinatra, Bill Crosby, Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack. There was a very important 12-hour show showcased by The Eagles in Ontario. A very sad moment also took place, the death of one of the most influential jazz musician in history, Duke Ellington.

1975: finally, Bruce Springsteen, with his third album, got success. The undeniable influence of the British Elton John broke another record filling the Dodger Stadium in LA, something that only The Beatles had made. Furthermore, a new music style called Disco appeared with artists like Barry White or Gloria Gaynor.

1976: one of the most popular groups was without any doubt Aerosmith who were even compared with The Rolling Stones. This year Paul McCartney finished his successful world tour in the USA. Two popular singers were Eric Carmen and the piano player Barry Manilow. Another new style was born and was called funk led by Wild Cherry and Robert Parissi. Jazz became popular one more time and his representative was the guitarist George Benson.

1977: for the first time, punk rock was really important represented by bands such as Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Between young people, Kiss was very popular. The couple James Taylor and Carly Simon got platinum record with their single Nobody Does It Better. R&B style and The Commodores were very successful. A very important jazz tour organised by Herbie Hancock took place. The music world also lost Elvis Presley and Bill Crosby, two legends.

1978: The British group Bee Gees lived an unbelievable successful year. The disco era was incredibly important and the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever sold 30 million copies.  Rock-country with Willie Nelson and pop-country with Dolly Parton surprised the whole country.  Even if Bruce Springsteen reappeared with his album Darkness on the Edge of Town considered one of the most important one in the rock history, Billy Joel was the most popular rock artist in 1978.  Thanks to the President Jimmy Carter, jazz music was again very popular in the USA

1979: the last year of this decade was lead by British bands such as Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, The Police, Blondie or the Bee Gees. Also in the USA we could see very important artists like Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Donna Summer or the unforgettable Village People. Two important singles appeared this year: I wanna be your lover of Prince and My Sharona of The Knack.

As you have been able to see, the 70s decade has been one of the most important one during the whole history of music with great artist who still sing today. Lucky us!
